Just last week, my little beagle stole my socks and ran around the house with them. I chased her around the house a bit, then stopped as I was out of breath.

After a few minutes, I turned around and saw her sitting on the floor by the couch in the living room. Puzzled, I walked over to see what was going on. The socks which were in her mouth is now under the couch. I pointed it to out her and encouraged her to go under the couch and grab it herself. She tried, squeezing into that little gap and then reversing out. I encouraged her again, and she did the same – in, out and still no sock. Then she sat there again, quiet and looking at me eagerly. I know that look.

I reached in to retrieve my now-soggy socks and gave it to her. She took it and jumped on the couch again, happily chewing on my socks once again. I went to shower in peace.

When I came out, she was nowhere to be found again. I searched the places she like to hide – the guest room, under my blanket, in the toilet, under the dining table. No dog in sight.

I entered the kitchen and I saw her there, sitting by her empty water bowl. Her eyes fixed on mine as I walked over and she started wagging her tail furiously. I filled up her water bowl and she lapped it all up in record time. What a silly dog, I thought to myself. Why didn’t she just try to attract my attention if she’s thirsty?

Then it struck me. She did ask. Just not the way I would have. Despite trying her best to reach that pair of socks deep under the couch, she knew she couldn’t and asked for help. I can’t remember how many times in my life I’ve faced a difficulty that I can’t overcome, yet I won’t ask for help. Whether it’s because of my ego or just being plain stubborn, it could have saved me so much trouble and so much frustration if only I had humbly admitted defeat and asked for help.

Also, asking doesn’t mean that help will come immediately. I bet she sat there for all the duration that I went and showered, but she waited patiently for her water to arrive. She didn’t know when I would have noticed her plea but she waited anyway, without even a whimper.

That night, she taught me one of life’s valuable lesson and its especially pertinent to me. If I want something I should ask. And after I ask, I should wait. If patience is indeed a virtue, then dogs must truly be saints.

This weekend I baked bread and certainly had a lot of fun. I’ll post it proper sometime in the week. in the meantime, here’s a little something I made for my girl with some leftover dough.

I truly believe that the dog is man’s best friend.

As much as I teach my little Angel all the right doggy behavior and the cute party tricks, once in a while, my little canine friend will teach me something about life which no other humans can.

Today is Angel’s birthday. She’s one dog year old, I think equivalent to 12 humans years. The past couple of months, she’s been through quite a bit. When she was three months old, she was fighting a severe infection that caused her lymph nodes to swell (vet said she had 50-50 chance to live). She has constant diarrhea because of her sensitive stomach, she went through a period of being tick-food. She had surgery complications when she got her tubes tied. And she spends most of the day at home by herself while we’re out at work.

But despite all these, I see in her eyes a beautiful exuberance for life every morning. Everyday is a brand new adventure. Whether she’s decorating the house, or helping us with our laundry. She doesn’t for one moment, think about and harp on all the terrible things that happened to her.

Carpe Diem. Isn’t that beautiful?

When was the last time you let something bad in the past go? When was the last time you woke up, stared in the mirror and told yourself that today, you will not live in pains or victories of yesterday, and live in that very moment?

I know I haven’t.

All my life, I’ve known people who can’t let go of the terrible things that happened to them – whether its their parents’ divorce, the loss of a loved one or a relationship gone sour. Every mistake they make in life, they blame it on that something. Every time they need an excuse for the decisions of the present, they bring up the events and memories of the past.

I’d like to live my life moving forward, not looking back. What’s past is past. What mistakes made are made. Yes, I’ve learned the lesson but I need to moved on. I might not be able to completely forget it, but I can certainly choose not to dwell in it. Every breath I take and every beat of my heart, is to keep me alive for the next few seconds. What good does it do to me trying to relive the past?

Thank you my furry canine friend, for showing me how to live for the moment.

Carpe Diem. Isn’t that beautiful?

Well, on new year’s eve my little beagle sneaked into the laundry room and found something interesting.
